Seven tries for Bedwas

Bedwas kept their Premiership play-off hopes firmly in tact with a convincing 50-3 win over Swansea at St. Helen’s on Wednesday evening.

The win means the Gwent outfit are now seven points clear of Llanelli in third place, albeit having played a game more.

With Pontypridd claiming top spot on Tuesday with a win over Cardiff, last night’s win keeps Bedwas in the driving seat in second.

They now turn their attentions to Saturday’s game away to Llanelli, a game with a lot at stake for both sides.

Last night though, Bedwas were firmly focused on Swansea and they duly delivered a result. They ran in seven tries, Matthew John and Matthew Pewtner both crossing for two tries apiece.

If the margin at the final whistle was decisive, the league’s second placed side had only led 17-3 at the break.

John’s two tries were both scored in the first half and sandwiched between a penalty from Lewis Robling. The fly half had converted both of John’s scores and although the wing had given Bedwas a comfortable lead, the game was far from over.

Nicky Thomas responded for Swansea with a penalty on the half hour to give his side a boost going into the second half.

After the break though, Bedwas cut loose as their attacking game flourished. They ran in five second half scores, Robling’s brilliant evening with the boot continuing in an impressive performance.

Inside centre Scott Williams-Greenway soon got things moving, adding Bedwas’ third try just three minutes after the break. Robling converted and soon added a score of his own but despite their dominance, Bedwas were then reduced to 14.

Rory Budina, who had come on for John as a blood replacement, was yellow carded but it failed to hinder the Bedwas backs.

Pewtner, on permit from the Newport Gwent Dragons, crossed for a quick-fire double on the hour and Lewis-Jon Hudd completed the scoring on the final whistle.

Robling had added four conversions to the five second half tries as Bedwas bounced back from their defeat to Bridgend last time out.
