Pontypridd have significantly boosted their attacking prowess for the coming season by adding fleet footed winger Alex Webber to their senior squad.

The Ferndale product, just turned 21, has represented Ystrad Rhondda over the past couple of seasons, and has also taken time out in New Zealand where he played for Greystone Marist.

Standing over 6ft tall, with power and pace being his attributes, Webber has made his mark in rugby league with the Celtic Crusaders and was capped by Wales at youth level in that code.

Most recently Webber has made a big impression with Wales Sevens under the mentorship of Ponty coach Paul John, and having scored the try of the tournament in the Japan tournament was also a member of the squad that went out to defend the World Cup crown in Moscow last month.

Webber made one cameo appearance on permit for Pontypridd last season in the home league win over Neath, but has now signed up for the club in readiness for the forthcoming winter campaign.

In welcoming the newest member of the squad, Ponty team manager Richard Langmead said: “We are making a quality addition to what is already a strong back line with the signing of Alex Webber. He has pace and a capability to score tries at the highest level.

“There is already good competition for the wing positions at Pontypridd, and Alex will add another dimension to our attacking play.”

A life-long supporter of Ponty, Webber can’t wait to get going.

“As a kid I used to go along to Sardis Road with my brother and watch all the big guns play there so it’s going to be a bit surreal playing in the famous jersey of Ponty,” he said.

“It’s not going to be easy there as they already have lots of good boys there and plenty of talent on the wing. I’ve just got to go there and back myself and when I get a chance, I have to make sure I take it.”

Walker is hoping to emulate ponty favourites Rhys Shellard and Adam Thomas who have successfully carved out successsful Sevens careers alongside their 15-a-side careers.

“Seeing Adam and Rhys do it gives me hope that I can achieve something similar. I’m really looking forward to the challenge ahead but it’s reassuring to know that everyone from my Ystrad Rhondda club are backing me all the way.”
