Host nation Russia claimed gold glory in both events after GB men saw their chances of gold dashed in the semi-final dashed when they suffered a 33-13 defeat to France while Italy stunned GB Women with a shock 14-5 victory in their semi.

GB men recovered to claim bronze by beating South Africa 31-14 with Welsh students James Cordy-Redden, Adam Field and Luke Treharne all getting on the score sheet with Treharne, Will Thomas (2) and Dorian Jones adding conversions in a comfortable win.

In the women’s competition the hosts, featuring 11 of the side that reached the World Cup quarter-finals last month, beat Italy 30-10 in the gold medal match with Ruziet Edidzhi and Marina Petrova both scoring twice for the hosts.

On the fourth and final day’s play in the women’s competition, France beat Brazil 21-0 to win the Bowl, while China won the Plate after an impressive 19-15 victory over Ukraine.
