Davies: Blues must pull together

Phil Davies insists Cardiff Blues must respond to their heavy Heineken Cup defeat at the hands of Exeter Chiefs collectively.

The Blues conceded five tries in a dismal first-half display at Sandy Park. They reclaimed some pride with a second-half fight-back that was capped with a try-scoring bonus-point.

But the comeback could not disguise the disappointment of the opening 40-minute horror show.

“Obviously we weren’t happy with it. That’s a bit of an understatement I suppose,” said Davies.

“We didn’t do anything we said we would do, particularly from our kicking game and that gave them too many opportunities to come back at us.

“We had to make 100 tackles and missed 20 and that’s not good enough at this level. It was disappointing. Out first-up tackling wasn’t as effective as it can be and should be. They got gain-line and everything else was there then.

“I can’t do anything about it now, it’s gone.

“I’m not out on the field, we are all in this together.

“Exeter are far from a mid-table team. They are an outstanding team and playing here they are a tough nut to crack.

“We have just got to keep on doing what we’ve got to do. Having rash decisions and pointing fingers is no good.

“We’ve got to stick together and get on with it and we will do. It’s not an individual thing, it’s a team thing.

“I still believe in myself. That’s never been an issue.”

The Blues face reigning kings of Europe Toulon at the Arms Park on Saturday and Davies insists there were some positives to take from the second-half showing that saw Lloyd Williams, Robin Copeland, Alex Cuthbert and Harry Robinson cross for tries.

“We got some points back on the board and scored four tries and I was pleased to get that point in the end,” added Davies.

“It will give us a bit of momentum to go into next week against Toulon. Overall I’m not pleased with the total outcome.

“But we will fix up what we need to fix up and go into Toulon with a bit of momentum. There will be work done on defence along with a few other things.”
