The Pitmen were never in the game as Lee Evans, Kevin James and Adam Whitney added tries to braces from hooker Ashley James and scrum-half Chris Morgan.

Meanwhile the Welsh All-Blacks’ title rivals slipped up, as Llanelli fell to a stunning defeat at Carmarthen Park. Three early penalties from fly-half David Higgins put the champions into their stride, before Higgins was caught in possession running it out of his own 22 and Rhys Jones converted the penalty for the home side.

The momentum stayed with the hosts as lock Hayden Pugh barged over for a converted try before Jones, James Stephenson and Chris Banfield added kicks to put the Quins 19-9 ahead. Llanelli worked hard to add two late penalties, but they failed to breach the home defence and the Quins held on for a famous 19-15 win.

Dean Gunter’s virtuoso display was enough to see Pontypridd to victory over an in-form Cross Keys at Pandy Park. The mercurial fly-half scored a try, converted it and added five penalties to score all Ponty’s points in a 22-13 triumph.

Newport gained their first win of the season with an accomplished display against Pontypool. No8 Hugo Ellis, wing Ifan Evans, centre Alan Awcock and flanker Rhys Jenkins all touched down for the Black and Ambers to ensure a 36-20 victory.

Tom Prydie’s return to the Swansea line-up after a serious knee injury was ruined by an industrious performance by Aberavon, as the Wizards ground out a 22-17 win at St. Helen’s.

Elsewhere, Llandovery beat Bridgend 23-12 and Cardiff battled past Bedwas 26-17.
