There were 5 sides who entered the U17 competition – Abergavenny (recently formed), Cardigan/Carmarthen, Caerphilly, Llandaff North and Newport.
Newport started off quietly beating Cardigan/Carmarthen 5-0. Next up was the tougher Llandaff North side, and again Newport were victorious 5-0.
Newport then took on Abergavenny. The hosts put up a brave fight but went down 30-0 to their more experienced opponents. Considering Abergavenny are a newly formed team, they played very well, have some very good players and the team was deemed to have much potential.
Last match of the day was against Caerphilly and Newport overcame their near neighbours by 30-0. Newport played exceptionally well in each game, scoring 14 tries and not having a try scored against them in any of their games.
The coaches, helpers, parents and supporters of the Newport girls were very proud of the team as they showed strength and excellent skills in beating all their opponents. The highlight of the day for the winners was having their picture taken with current Welsh Internationals Ian Gough and James Hook.
The tournament and venue were both excellent and the day was a great success, with hopes that more teams enter next season’s tournament to carry on the good work from this year.
Well done and many thanks to all at Abergavenny RFC on organising a wonderful day for rugby players of all ages and skill levels.
