Young backs Czekaj to bounce back

Cardiff Blues boss Dai Young knows he’s saved himself a fortune with the return to fitness of Chris Czekej.

Young has been a pivotal figure during Chekej’s rehabilitation from a horror leg break last year, and has applauded the player ahead of the new season.

“It’s like having a new signing with Chris back. He’s like a new player and it’s  a real bonus for us, said Young.

He said: “All of Chris’ tests have shown he’s back to where he was. He’s had the chance to work on his upper body strength and now he’s back big and strong. He will be a real force for the Blues this season.”

Young used Jamie Roberts and Tom James as his wing duo last term and is able to call on the service of Aled Blew and Richard Mustoe this season after they made the switch to the Arms Park

Czekaj feared his career was over when he suffered a broken femur break against Australia last summer.

But the 22-year-old ended his injury nightmare in the Blues’ first pre-season friendly two weeks ago and is now pushing for his place in the Magners League opener against champions Leinster on September 6.

“Being injured is a lonely place but he never had any negative thoughts about making a comeback and I’ve really admired him,” said Young.

“It’s a testament to his attitude that he’s back playing again. Before the injury, Chris was improving game by game and deserved his Wales call-up.”
