GIRLS’ RUGBY RUNS RIOT AT THE MILLENNIUM STADIUM

In beautiful sunshine, on the national pitch of Wales, 44 teams from schools representing every unitary authority in Wales played in the Under 14 Tag Rugby and Under 17 Touch Rugby Competitions.

The day was the culmination of a girls’ school rugby programme that started in January 2006 in response to Health Challenge Wales’ call to improve the health of our nation.  The 44 teams were the lucky finalists who qualified through unitary authority tournaments.

After more than 100 games, Abersychan Comprehensive (Torfaen) defeated Coedcae School (Carmarthenshire) in the final of the under 14s competition and Ysgol Plasmawr (Cardiff) were victorious over Llantwit Major Comprehensive (Vale of Glamorgan) in the under 17s final.

Nicola Smith, WWRU community rugby manager commented “It was a thoroughly enjoyable day and the level of skills the girls showed throughout was really impressive.  I hope that many of them have now caught the rugby bug and continue to play for one of the girls’ club teams in Wales.
“I would like to thank all the rugby development officers, community coaches, teachers and volunteers for their hard work over the past few months.”
