Full-back Rhys Williams proved a match winner, scoring the only try of the game and kicking two penalties to seal an 11-3 win that took Waunarlwydd three points clear of their opponents and six-points above west division bottom side Builth Wells.
A relieved Waunarlwydd coach Rhodri Williams said: “It wasn’t a pretty game by any means but this game was all about the result.
“It’s hard to describe the significance of the result, not only was it a local derby, but the pressure was really on. It’s a dog fight down at the bottom of the league and the boys showed real character to get the win, out defensive effort was massive.
“It would be massive to hold out this season and stay up at this level so this win was really important to pull away from the bottom two.”
However the bottom three sides are still adrift of nearest rivals Whitland who secured a 28-19 win at Llangennech with a powerful second-half display.
Phil Morgan, Dion Thomas and Aled Evans all went over while fly-half Aled Davies kicked two conversions and thee penalties.
West leaders Cwmllynfell stayed in pole position courtesy of a 29-17 win over Merthyr thanks to tries from Paul Skilton, Andrew Luther, Shaun Flyman and a penalty try. Peter Thomas converted three of those tries and added a penalty.
Cwmllynfell remain just a point ahead of Bonymaen who had to rely on six penalties from the trusty boot of outside-half Craig Jones to overcome Narberth for whom Nick Jones scored the game’s only try.
Narberth are level on points with Carmarthen Quins and Bridgend Athletic who also registered wins at Loughor and Builth Wells respectively.
Newbridge moved three points clear at the top of the East Division after running in five tries against Newport Saracens at the Welfare
Ground. Robert Smith crossed twice before Kristian Perry and Stuart Smith followed as well as being awarded a penalty try in the 37-17.
Their win was compounded by defeat for Uwic who let slip a commanding first-half lead at Beddau. The students raced into a surprise 20-3 lead by half-time through tries from Charles Barkley and Matt Trowbridge and 16 points from the boot of Scott Sneddon.
But Beddau produced a stirring second-half comeback wiith 24 points thanks to a brace of tries from Chris Bundy and a score by Owen Thomas as well as the accurate kicking of Steve Robinson.
