Hat-trick for Wales Women

Hat-trick for Wales Women

The senior team recorded a 24-0 victory over the Netherlands, the Development Squad notched up a 17-5 win over the Royal Navy and Wales Students defeated British Colleges 37-5.

The senior victory was their seventh on the trot, the most successful winning run for the team in their history. The game, originally scheduled at Caerphilly RFC, had to be moved to Llanrumney playing fields at the last minute due to a waterlogged pitch.

Louise Rickard started well with some strong running, scoring a try in the second minute to take Wales into an early lead. The game became quite a scrappy affair after this, understandable in the conditions, and fraught with unforced errors. Wales went in at half-time just 5-0 up. A penalty try six minutes into the second half resulted from a strong Wales scrum which was duly converted by Naomi Thomas. This was followed by tries late on into the game by Naomi Thomas and Kylie Wilson.

Head Coach, Fielies Coetsee commented, “It proved a good opportunity for us to play some younger players who have not experienced much rugby at this level and the game allowed us to assess what we need to work on before the Six Nations; there is still much to do”.

The Dutch will have come away from the game with their heads held high, pleased to have finished with a better scoreline against Wales than Italy in November.
