Left winger John weighed in with a brace, including the last gasp match-winner, as Senghenydd fought back from 20-23 to secure only a second win of the season.

Scrum half Hywel Griffiths crossed for a try and Justin Loveridge kicked two penalties and two conversions as Senghenydd powered into a 20-3 half-time lead. A plucky Pontypool fought back after the break and just when it looked as though they would take the game John popped up to clinch the vital score.

Loose-head prop Matt Angel put himself in contention for taking the Robin Reliant home for Christmas with a two-try man-of-the-match display as Penallta notched a 66-0 whitewash of visiting Pontllanfraith. Angel’s impressive display in the ten-try rout means he could spend the festive period driving the dreaded three-wheeler which is part and parcel of Penallta’s man-of-the-match award.

Andre Sirocco, Geraint Thomas, Sean Powell, Chris Harries, James Powell, Karl Rees, Gareth Davies and Gareth Watkins all crossed for the league leaders who are now three points clear.

Newport HSOB ran out 14-15 winners in their clash with Cwmbran  a battle between second and third in the table. The Old Boys scored three push-over tries courtesy of a fine performance from the forwards and had to withstand a late Cwmbran comeback to keep in touch with leaders Penallta.

Second-from-bottom Brynmawr’s clash with basement-dwellers Abercarn fell victim to the poor weather affecting much of the country this weekend, as did Brynithel’s meeting with Blaina.

Division five east was also heavily affected by the weather with four out of five fixtures postponed due to unplayable pitches. Usk came out on top in the league’s only game of the day with a useful 12-18 away victory at Caldicot.

The visitors were ahead 5-8 at half time through a try and penalty before the hosts fought back to take a 12-8 lead through tries from Simon Bailey and Gavin Bradberry and a Vince Minto conversion. Yet Usk replied with a further two tries to consolidate their third place in the league.
