UWIC MAINTAIN WINNING WAYS

Club graphic

Due to several injuries and a physical game in midweek UWIC made seven changes to their starting line up and early on looked a little of the pace. However they showed superb commitment and determination to grind out a much deserved victory.

The physicality of a big Llandaff North side took UWIC by surprise as they have been more used to smaller and fitter university sides of late.  The early exchanges were dominated by North, resulting in a well worked try for promising young wing Sophie Wilkinson.  This seemed to spark UWIC into life as they began to gain parity at the breakdown and in the set pieces, with Eirlys Lougher outstanding in defence.

With Llandaff North tiring towards the end of the first half UWIC began to take control of the game and increase the tempo as their superior fitness came to the fore.  Amy Day looked very sharp and exploited the gaps around the rucks and after a good break fed Helen Amos to cross for a score converted by Phillipa Tuttiett.  This was repeated on the stroke of half time from a quick penalty causing confusion in the Llandaff North defence allowing Helen Amos to race in at the corner, again Tuttiett adding the extras.

Playing with renewed belief in the second half UWIC took advantage of a tiring Llandaff North pack and imposed their fitness at the scrums.  Helen Amos completed her fifth hat-trick of the season after the forwards drove Llandaff North over from a five metre scrum.  The front row of Sally Hinds, Sara Davies and Lisa Williams gaining just reward for their efforts throughout the game.

Late in the game Amy Day capped an excellent individual performance with a superb solo try from the half way line.  Another quick tap caught the Llandaff North defence asleep and she jinked past three players before outpacing the cover defence to score under the posts.  Llandaff North did hit back with the last move of the game scoring a consolation try after the forwards, led by a series of good runs from inspirational captain Amy Broadstock, pushed their way over.

UWIC Scorers: Tries – Helen Amos (3), Amy Day. Cons – Phillipa Tuttiett (3)
