The Welsh forwards took the upper hand from the outset making good ground through strong lineout work and driving by the pack. Wales took the lead after just 8 minutes when the backs spun the ball out wide to Full Back Elen Evans who went over for the first try.
Wales continued to apply the pressure and ten minutes later, Caernarfon winger Manon Williams scored in the other corner following good passing along the back line. Wales had the majority of possession in the first half with the forwards securing good ball for the backs to be creative.
Wales made substitutes in the backs at half time and scrum half Gemma Allan immediately made her mark, crossing the line for Wales’ third try.
The Army put their only points on the board when Wales were penalised in front of the posts. Fly half Martina Ashton kicked the penalty bringing the score to 15-3.
Wales were soon back in the Army’s half. Hard running No. 8 Emma Phillips picked up from the scrum and powered over the line for a well-deserved try.
With twenty minutes remaining, Manon Williams showed her speed on the wing to score her second try of the match. Wales continued to apply the pressure until the final whistle but despite several attacks the Army’s defence held. The final score was 25-3.
It was a positive performance by Wales. With 11 of the 22 still eligible for Under 19s this season it reflects the success of the development structure in Wales. For the Development XV, this is their fifth win in six matches since the squads inception last season, and is proving to be a vital cog in the WWRU National Squads structure.
