Llanelli’s veteran backrower Ian Boobyer scored a vital try as the west-Wales side rescued a 17-all draw at home to Llandovery, but still can’t climb off the bottom of the Welsh Premier League table.

Boobyer scored a well-taken second-half try and fly-half Ciaran Thomas added four penalty goals as Llanelli fought back from a 9-14 halftime deficit to share the points. A win would have taken the Scarlets above Bedwas at the foot of the table, but they have another week at the bottom instead.

Elsewhere, League leaders Newport fought back from a 29-point deficit to pull off a stunning 37-35 win at Virginia Park. Fly-half Daniel Griffiths was the hero, scoring an injury-time try and coolly converting it to rescue the hot favourites after they trailed 6-35 two minutes into the second half. Griffiths finished the match with 24 points.

The Cheesemen dominated the first 40 minutes, with their well-drilled pack giving the backs plenty of chances in slippery conditions, but even a try to No 8 Andrew Williams as the second half kicked off wasn’t enough as Newport scored 31 unanswered points in the comeback of the season.

Neath needed a rare victory in Cardiff to stay in touch with the Black and Ambers, and they made no mistake with a crushing 34-9 victory over the Blue and Blacks.

Neath ran in five tries in their first League win at the Arms Park for more than a decade.

Carmarthen Quins skipper Paul Arnold, who won 16 Wales caps at lock while playing for Swansea, was among the try-scorers as the Quins downed his old club, 17-13. The victory cements Carmarthen’s third-place position in the table as their impressive season continues.

Newbridge scored five first-half tries as they put Pontypool to the sword, 42-26, while Wales Under-21 backrower Mark Lewis was among the try-scorers as Pontypridd downed an unpredictable Bedwas side 25-13.

Speedy winger Paul Jones scored a brace of tries as Bridgend downed Aberavon 20-12, while Cross Keys scored a good 28-6 win over Ebbw Vale, with two tries to centre Gareth Chapman.

Results: Aberavon 12 Bridgend 20, Caerphilly 35 Newport 37, Cardiff 9 Neath 34, Carmarthen Quins 17 Swansea 13, Ebbw Vale 6 Cross Keys 28 Llanelli 17 Llandovery 17, Pontypool 26 Newbridge 42, Pontypridd 25 Bedwas 13.
