David Moffett Takes Up New Role At Welsh Rugby Union

David Moffett has officially taken up his role as the new Group Chief Executive of the Welsh Rugby Union.
His starting date comes the day after the WRU Group advertised three more new posts – Chief Executive, Welsh Rugby Union, Chief Executive, Millennium Stadium plc and Group Commercial Marketing Director.
The men or women who fill the new posts will work alongside Mr Moffett at the head of the new corporate structure voted for by the member clubs of the WRU to take the game forward in Wales both on and off the field.
“I’ve been able to get a flavour of the job over the past three weeks by getting involved with a few issues and now I’m really looking forward to taking on the role full time,” said Mr Moffett.
“There are many challenges ahead for the game in Wales, but there is also much to build on. There is huge tradition in Welsh rugby and greater value than many people give the game credit for.
“One of the most immediate issues the game has to resolve is the future shape and format of the professional structure and that is something I will be speaking at length to the clubs about.
“There is a need to examine every aspect of the game to ensure we are delivering precisely what is needed to each area. Welsh rugby is big business these days, with a turn over of almost £34m, but the lifeblood of the game remains at the grassroots level and with the wonderful supporters.
“Steve Hansen and Alan Phillips have the newly named Royal Bank of Scotland Six Nations Championship to prepare for and I’m sure that everyone in Wales is getting ready to host England at the Millennium Stadium in February.
“It’s not every day you get the chance to tackle the best team in the world and it must be the role of everyone involved in Welsh rugby to try to knock them off their pedestal.
“The ultimate goal is to restore Welsh rugby to the forefront of the international game both on and off the field. That will take time and team work, but I’m convinced we can build on what we have got and make it much, much better.”
