After several meetings on Thursday, Welsh Rugby Union Group Chief Executive David Moffett announced that the country’s nine Premier clubs had tabled a proposal for five ‘Superclubs’.

That proposal, along with the WRU’s plan for four provinces, will be tabled at a General Committee meeting on Thursday, January 23. They will vote on which option will be taken forward to an EGM of the Union on February 23, where the final decision will be made.Mr Moffett said: ‘The clock is ticking and we’ve finally put a line in the sand.

‘It is now time for Welsh Rugby to show leadership.’

Mr Moffett said he had given the clubs seven days to ‘flesh out’ what he described as the ‘bare bones’ of their proposal.

He would not comment on the makeup of the five teams, but it is understood they are Llanelli; Swansea and Neath; Cardiff and Caerphilly; Bridgend and Pontypridd; and Newport and Ebbw Vale.
