Llanelli must treat every game like a cup final, says Fisher

Paul Fisher

PAUL Fisher insists his Llanelli side need to approach their remaining games as cup finals if they are to avoid relegation from the Principality Premiership.

The west Walians are currently 13th in the table and face an almighty scrap with Cross Keys, Bedwas and Bridgend to retain their top-flight status. Despite having the luxury of playing four of their remaining five games at home Fisher has warned his side they face a tough ask against an in-form Aberavon side on Saturday.

“I think Aberavon are one of the most consistent teams in the Premiership,” he said.
“They are well drilled and have a lot of variation in their game. They’re comfortable competing in tight games and have a lot of gas out wide so they have the ability to play an all court game.

“The result against Cross Keys and the way we played should stand us in good stead and give us the confidence to go into this game.  Without being disrespectful to Cross Keys we are fully aware that Aberavon will be a completely different test. There’s Bedwas, Bridgend and ourselves in a battle.

“At this point of the year it is about getting points on the board and we need to treat every game like a cup final. If we could get a result on Saturday and other results go our way it would be huge.”

Llanelli have endured a difficult season with one of Welsh rugby’s most historic clubs facing the almost unthinkable prospect of relegation. But Fisher maintains the mood in the camp is upbeat ahead of a taxing end of season run-in.

He said: “It has been a difficult season because there’s been that added pressure of relegation. Throughout the campaign the camp has remained buoyant.

“We’ve tried to keep as much pressure off the players are we can and try to concentrate on the performances. When you look back there are probably three or four games that have been one score games where if they had gone our way we’d probably be in a different position now.

“At the beginning of the year everybody spoke initially about needing 60 points to be safe. But I think potentially 57 points might be enough for the play-off spot. There’s a lot of mileage left in it yet.”

Tonight live on ScrumV Cardiff welcome Bridgend to the BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park. Steve Law’ side are currently a mere two points behind leaders Merthyr while Bridgend are in the midst of a battle to avoid relegation.

Meanwhile, Pontypridd will be hoping to stay in the title race as they travel to Llandovery while Merthyr will be confident of extending their lead at the top as they face a trip to struggling Cross Keys. Bargoed host already relegated Neath with RGC1404 making the long trip to Bedwas.

Tenth place Carmarthen Quins go up against Richard Lancaster’s Swansea while Ebbw Vale travel to Rodney Parade to face Newport in an all Gwent clash.
