Powell and co-coach Matthew Watkins may both have played for Wales at the home of Welsh rugby, but it will be a first visit as coaches for the former Newport and Dragons team mates.
“It is huge to be playing in that stadium, it’s a mad feeling. I’ve been there myself, but it’s not about me, it’s about these boys,” said Powell.
“They’ve worked hard all season and we targeted getting to the final. We’ve had some tough games – Rhiwbina, Rumney and Nelson all away – and we knew how tough it was going to be against Penallta because they’d been there before and knew how to play in cup ties.
“I’m simply over the moon, it’s the best feeling in the world and I will cherish this moment forever. This couldn’t have happened to a better bunch of lads.”
It won’t be the last Powell and Brecon see of Penallta because they still have to meet twice in Division 1 East as the race for the title unfolds. The Pitmen currently trail Brecon by a point in having played a game more.
Penallta had plenty of possession but lacked a cutting edge. Dean Gunter opened the scoring for Brecon with the first of his five penalties and he also converted a try by Ewan Williams to bag a match tally of 17 points. Laurence Pritchard converted Ross Edwards’ two tries for the Pitmen and also kicked a penalty.
Brecon get back into league action on Wednesday night with a trip to Ynysybwl as they aim for a 16th straight win to move further ahead at the top. They then head to Risca on Saturday.
“This is my second season coaching at Brecon and I learned a lot in my first year. Having Matthew and defence coach Matthew Lewis to work with makes it much easier and they have done great work with the team,” said Powell.
“We know Bonymaen have a great club history and are a good side. Cup games can go either way and the best team will win on the day.”
