Looking to build on the previous weekend’s 40-15 triumph over Pencoed, Pontyclun began strongly and never released their grip on proceedings.
Pontyclun made a strong start, keeping their hosts locked in their own half allowed the Falcons to play through the phases and gain ground deep in Burry Port’s 22. Securing the scrum 5m out, Pontyclun drove their way over with prop Jess Dix grounding the ball over the line for the opening score. Brogan Jones’ conversion handed the visitors an early 7-0 lead.
Burry Port tried to answer back with their own attack, but a swift turnover from the Falcons was quickly taken. Quick interplay amongst the backline allowed fullback Rafiuke Taylor the space to run over the whitewash for her side’s second try of the game. Jones adding the extras took Pontyclun 14-0 ahead, with just under 20 minutes on the clock.
Coming out for the second half, Pontyclun were on the front foot from the off. A quick break from Taylor, saw the full-back slice her way through the defensive line to score her second try of the match. Jones kept the scoreboard ticking over with the conversion, giving the visitors a 21-0 lead.
Burry Port looked for ways to build an attack in Pontyclun’s half, but struggled against a solid set-piece from their opponents. A penalty in favour of Pontyclun, allowed Jones to kick for the lineout deep in Burry Port’s 22. Securing the ball at the lineout and a blitzing drive from the pack made way for Jordan Hopkins to add her name to the score sheet. Jones again added the extras.
Despite having a huge score-line to climb, Burry Port dug deep and kept pushing. Puncturing their way through Pontyclun’s defence, a quick run out wide allowed Alana Powell the space to crash over the line in the corner for the hosts.
But Pontyclun regathered quickly to set up camp in Burry Port’s half once again. A huge driving maul from the pack allowed Jess Pritchard to pick up off the back and dart over the line for the try. Jones conversion sealed the deal for the Falcons.
Elsewhere in the Women’s Premiership, Pencoed’s game against Swansea was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
Next weekend sees Burry Port travel to face Swansea at St Helen’s whilst Pontyclun host Llandaff North while Bonymaen take on Pencoed at home in the third game of the Premiership.
