The Wales U18 wing took top billing in the 39-15 win over Llandovery that clinched a final spot against reigning champions Coleg Y Cymoedd next week. Not only will the title be up for grabs, but it will give the Gwent side the chance to take revenge for their only defeat this season.
“I guess the million dollar question is how do you bat Cymoedd? They seem to be in the final of this competition every year and they have a great rugby programme and another strong team,” said Coleg Gwent rugby director, Matthew Jones.
“It is great to have a change in the final this year after so many season of Cymoedd against Sir Gar, but we will go in as the underdogs. That said, we will be going to win it.
“This has been a long time in coming and full credit to the players for the way they have gone about their business this season. I’ve been at the college since 2014 and the previous best to this was reaching a play-off and going own to Sir Gar.
“Now we’ve got the chance to do something special and bring the title back to Gwent. One of my coaches, Scott Matthews, was the captain of the team that last won the title in 2012 and it would be nice to have a more recent triumph to talk about with him.”
There were six tries in all for Gwent in their demolition of Llandovery at Ystrad Mynach. Their win came the day after Cymoedd had gone to Llanelli and delivered a killer blow to Sir Gar on their own patch.
The champions ran in five tries in what was a do or die game for both teams. Defeat for Sir Gar meant they missed out on a place in the final for the first time in the 10 year history of the competition having been victorious in four of the nine finals.
“Being beaten at home like that by Cymoedd is tough to take, but we lost to the better team on the night. They came with a level of physicality we couldn’t match and played really well in difficult conditions,” admitted Sir Gar director of rugby, Euros Evans.
Steff Davies, Ryan Wilkins, Ryan Jenkins, skipper Rhys Anstey and Efan Daniels claimed the Cymoedd tries and Tyler Morris added four conversions. Centre Eddie James and hooker Lewis Morgan crossed for Sir Gar.
