All’s Well For Devle

All’s Well For Devle

Wales newcomer Gareth Delve completed a perfect week by helping Bath save their Zurich premiership status.
The 20-year-old back-row forward saw his dream realised when he was named in Steve Hansen’s 30-strong squad for next month’s tour to Australia and New Zealand.
And just four days later he returned to club duty at the Recreation Ground to help Bath complete their great escape.
Delve, who came on as a replacement for American Dan Lyle, was one of five Welshmen in the Bath side on crucial last-day victory over Newcastle that ensured Premiership rugby for another season.
‘His selection is an inspired choice,’ said Bath coach Mike Foley.
‘He’s a unique talent and this experience with the national set-up will really bring him on as a player.’
For Cardiff-born Delve his selection is a dream come true having progressed through the national age levels and having captained Wales Under-19s in the FIRA World Cup and after missing nine months with a serious knee injury.
But Delve obviously shares the same fighting spirit as his Royal Marine older brother, who recently returned from serving in Iraq, and has battled his way back not only for his club – but also for his country.
‘Getting the call for the tour was a massive shock, it’s something I have always dreamed of but never thought would come around this soon,’ said Delve.
‘I had trained with the squad before Christmas but thought this year I would have to work more on my game and my fitness following the injury.
‘But obviously this is fantastic news and a great opportunity. It would be great to play in one of the Tests but I’m well aware that there are plenty of quality players going on the squad and just to be involved is special.’

Devle’s focus will now be on helping his side to life the PARKER PEN CHALLENGE CUP. Bath play London Wasps at the Madejski Stadium on May 25.
