Llandaff North Win National Cup Title

Llandaff North Ladies took their second title of the season on Sunday when they beat Tylorstown in the National Cup Final at Sardis Road. The South Division One winners took the early lead through a try from second row Sam Williams when she picked up from the ruck and dived over the line.

The pressure was all on Tylorstown in the opening minutes with Llandaff North showing their strength up front, dominating the scrum and line out. Tylorstown had a brief spell camped on the Llandaff North line but solid tackling denied Tylorstown any points.

With ten minutes to go to the break, Llandaff North’s forwards secured quick ball from the ruck, centre Jess Kidley made a break and great support play by Lowena Sandercock allowed Gemma Williams to pace down the wing to score. Minutes later full back Sandercock added a third leaving the half time score 15-0.

Tylorstown made a couple of substitutions bringing Non Evans and April Dent off the bench for the second half. Evans immediately made an impact, making some dangerous runs through mid field, Claire Flowers should have capitalised on an overlap but a knock on denied Tylorstown their first points. Flowers didn’t make the same mistake twice, when Stacey Saunders fed her a quick pass and she powered through the Llandaff North defence to score under the posts. Saunders converted to bring the score to 15-7.

Tylorstown closed the gap to just three points when winger Louise Daniels ran in Tylorstown’s second but Llandaff North displayed some intelligent rugby when Amy Day released quick ball from the scrum, the backs moved it out wide and Gemma Williams crossed the line for her second. A minute later Non Evans scored a run away try, which Stacey Saunders converted making for an exciting last five minutes. Llandaff North held on to take victory 20-19.

Llandaff North will be going for their third title of the season, National League Champions when they face Caernarfon next Sunday in Llanidloes.
