Billy Trew Jr, who skippered the All Whites in season 1930-31, was the son of the legendary W J (Billy) Trew, who played for Wales against the 1905 All Blacks and was capped 29 times in various back positions.
It was a hard act to follow for Billy Jr. whose father died in Swansea 77 years ago at the age of 48. However, he made his Swansea debut just a month after his father’s death in 1926 and played only a further six weeks later that season in his club’s 11-6 loss to the touring Maoris team.
A stylish half back or centre, similar to his father, Billy joined many other in the 1930s by switching to Rugby League when employment was scarce in South Wales. He played for Swinton until injuries ended his career.
Billy Jr, whose brothers Harry and Bert also played for Swansea, died on July 8, 2003.
