The Students suffered a disappointing Championship Cup campaign recently, but made amends with this impressive performance having dropped into the Plate. Dan Milton’s side score four tries in total with Tom Workman, Keian Richards, Dylan Davies, and Ewan Bowden touching down for tries.
Jamin Hodgkins also contributed 10 points from the kicking tee. Blindside Flanker Steve John crossed for Tata Steel’s only try of the game. Head coach Milton has a tough balancing act with the university playing BUCS Super League fixtures in midweek, meaning he has to find the right balance between continuity and resting players.
But his side were on fire here as they completely outplayed Tata Steet. Loosehead prop Workman claimed the games opening try as he powered his way over from short-range, before scrum-half Richards finished off a tremendous team try.
Elusive wing Bowden was a threat throughout this entertaining fixture, and he showed his pace to touch down at the far right-hand corner. Replacement scrum-half Davies also got in on the action as he ran in unopposed from 30 metres out to secure an impressive victory for Cardiff Met.
John scored a late consolation try with the blindside benefitting from a well-set driving lineout by the home sides pack. In the only other Championship Plate fixture being played this weekend Bedwas edged out a 13-5 away win at Cross Keys.
The game was played in difficult conditions at Pandy Park with the Bedwas pack having too much power for the hosts to deal with. Bedwas’ only try was scored by powerful No 8 Alex Bourne who showed his strength when he barged his way past three defenders to touch down. Matt Bancroft improved their lead with a conversion, while the also kicked another penalty.
Replacement Dion McIntosh put Bedwas 13-0 up with a successful penalty attempt from 35 metres out. To their credit Cross Keys refused to throw in the towel and No 8 Francisco Suoto also showed his power with a try from short-range. But it was too little too late as Bedwas held out for the win.
Unfortunately, yesterday’s Swansea Valley derby between Trebanos and Ystalyfera was called off after falling victim to the weather.
