One of four teams to end Day 1 with a 100% record, Wales beat Russian, Kenya and Argentina to progress through to the Cup competition knock-out stages.
Richie Pugh’s squad saw off the Pool C challenges without any mishaps, although Wales had to spend the final three minutes of their opening game against next year’s RWC Sevens hosts Russia holding on to their three point lead.
Tries from Cardiff Blues and Wales 6 Nations squad member Harry Robinson and Adam Thomas gave the Welsh side a 10-0 interval lead, but the Russians hit back with a converted try midway through the second half.
The game against Kenya proved to be a little easier, as Pugh, Lee Williams, Robinson again and Richard Smith ran in tries in a 22-0 triumph. That set-up a Pool decider against the Pumas in a re-match of the 2009 RWC Sevens final in Dubai.
Robinson scored the first try to maintain his run of form and then Smith ran in two more to give Wales a 17-5 victory that earned them a quarter-final clash with the Wallabies, who finished as runners-up to New Zealand in Pool B.
