Nerveless Coleg Gwent win cliffhanger

Coleg Gwent came from behind to snatch victory over arch rivals Coleg Sir Gar in dramatic fashion in the Colleges League Play-off final held at Bridgend RFC this afternoon.

Played in atrocious weather conditions throughout, Coleg Sir Gâr had edged in front 16-14 and appeared to be heading towards victory but Coleg Gwent fly half Niall Martin showed nerves of steel to bang over a snap drop goal to secure victory deep into injury time.

The victors had led 14-10 at the break but two second half penalties from Coleg Sir Gâr’s Jack Maynard in the 24th and 29th minute put his side 16-14 ahead. The Llanelli side stood firm as Coleg Gwent sought a way through their defence. Just when it appeared Coleg Sir Gâr had done enough, up stepped Martin with the decisive kick of the match.

Coleg Sir Gâr were the first to score in the match when Jack Maynard rifled over a penalty in the 15th minute but that was quickly cancelled out by a reply from Martin in the 17th minute.

Coleg Sir Gâr nosed back in front thanks to a try by winger Jake Randall in the 20th minute, which he then converted. But the Gwent outfit hit back through inside centre Ethan Davies who banged over a long range penalty in the 24th minute. He followed that up with another effort in the 33rd minute.

The 17-16 victory was built on a solid platform up front where hooker Elliott Dee and No 8 James Benjamin were influential with strong carrying
