Shingler happy to trade holiday plans

Aaron Shingler admits he would be happy to scrap Tenerife holiday plans in order to jet Down Under with Wales.

The Scarlets forward had been organising a trip to the Canary Islands this summer but is instead eyeing a place on the plane to Australia.

Shingler has been included in Rob Howley’s extended squad for the summer series and is set to face the Barbarians this weekend.

“I did have plans,” said the 24-year-old. “I would have gone to Tenerife for a fortnight in about a week’s time.

“But I’ve had a pretty decent season. I’m pleased to be playing the rugby I have and let’s hope it continues. I’d be happy to trade Tenerife for Australia!”

If selected against the Baa-Baas, Shingler aims to produce another impressive performance, following his debut against Ireland, to enhance his chances of touring Australia.

And he reckons the both the Barbarians and the hard grounds of the southern hemisphere would suit his open and athletic style of play.

“Hopefully I’ll get an opportunity to show what I can do,” added Shingler.

“It’s going to suit my style of game. I’d hope it’s going to be a nice day with a lot of running rugby.

“I’m hoping to have a few runs if I can get the ball in space and create a bit of an impact. You only get a few chances to make your name, so if you perform well there’s a good future for you.”

“They are cutting four people, so that will be interesting. It would be great to be part of the squad. It’s not often you get the chance to go to Australia.

“I probably wouldn’t go there normally. So I’m really hoping to go over there and to get an opportunity to play.

“The hard grounds should suit me. I’m reasonably fast and I’ll try and do a bit.

“I’m hoping to go out there for the experience as well, country-wise. There’s plenty of things to do out there. It will just be a great experience to get out there.”
