The home side were never allowed to get going as Morgannwg’s powerful forwards supplied plenty of ball to their aggressive, quick backs.
Six first-half tries were enough to secure the victory by half-time as Morgannwg ran riot. Leading 36-0 at the interval, the game was already up and although they did add three further scores in the second-half, Morgannwg took their foot off the pedal noticeably.
Despite the comprehensive defeat, Bridgend had the first chances to get points on the board but Josh White failed to land two difficult early penalty efforts. And they were made to pay as Morgannwg soon added what was the first of a number of scores.
A lovely break from fly-half Jared Evans left the Bridgend defence scrambling and set up field position inside the opposition half. Following a number of phases, scrum-half Shaun Powell picked up and had too much power for the Bridgend defence as he powered over from the base of the ruck. Evans converted for a 7-0 lead.
It was early days but Morgannwg’s power upfront was all too evident. Continued possession and quick recycling of the ball then saw winger Jack Huntley cross in the corner. Evans missed the conversion but it mattered for little as Huntley then added his second and the try of the match. Picking the ball up inside his own 22 and with little space to work with, the winger turned the Bridgend defence inside out to dot down for a brilliant solo effort. Evans again failed to add the extra two.
Fullback Ellis Wyn Benham then got in on the action, the beneficiary after Evans had picked up a bouncing ball and spread the ball wide. The Morgannwg fly-half was enjoying the game, converting Benham’s score before adding a try of his own as his side went 29-0 up. And there was still time for Rob Lewis to crash over for a half-time lead of 36-0.
The second-half was a more competitive affair, Morgannwg making a number of changes with the game virtually already won.
It didn’t seem to matter initially as Liam Belcher burst over under the posts to extend the Morgannwg lead. Evans converted and his side led 43-0.
Bridgend then claimed their only points of the game, what turned out to be a consolation score with replacement back row forward Liam Thomas crashing over. White converted but that was as good as it got for the home side.
Morgannwg added two further tries courtesy of Brad Llewellyn and Levi Knowles as their superiority was reflected in a 55-7 win.
