Llanelli welcomed back Dion and Rhodri Jones from injury and both made big contributions to the team.
Rhodri was immense at scrum time and his all-round forward technique was top notch while young 18 year old Dion, making his debut on the left wing, showed great promise and looks like he could develop into a fine back three player.
Owen Williams playing at inside centre impressed in both attack and defence and again, despite missing a couple of penalties, kicked really well. Williams opened with a couple of good penalties, with Wizard’s outside half Craig Evans kicking one in reply.
Llanelli were applying lots of pressure to the Aberavon line in the early stages. Another excellent scrum laid the platform for the hard working Stuart Leach to feed Ryan Jones to go on a great 22m run and touch down under the posts. Owen Williams converted before he and Evans exchanged penalties before the half time whistle.
Llanelli extended their lead with another Williams penalty and a fine individual try from debutant Dion Jones. Dribbling the ball from 45 metres out, Jones produced an excellent pick up under pressure to touch down.
Some injuries, unwanted niggle and negativity was affecting the quality of the spectacle and Referee Tim Hayes sent Aberavon’s Gareth Harvey and Llanelli skipper Adam Powell to the bin.
Llanelli, with over 30 minutes remaining and leading 26-6 will be disappointed with their application and accuracy as they pushed for the bonus point. But nevertheless they can feel satisfied with a win and realise there is lots of hard work to be done, particularly in attack.
