Sharp shooter Thompson closing in on landmark

Gareth Thompson

Gareth Thompson of Merthyr runs in to score a try.

Merthyr fly half Gareth Thompson is in pole position to become the first player to reach the magical 100 points barrier when his side take on Carmarthen Quins in the S4C televised Indigo Group Premiership clash tomorrow evening.

The former Cardiff pivot is the leading points scorer in the league and cup with 82 points with Newport’s Will Reed his nearest challenger five points behind. Llandovery marksman Kristian Jones is third with 76 points, just a single point ahead of Cardiff’s Jacob Beetham.

Llandovery winger Aaron Warren of Pontypridd is leading the try scoring stakes with nine tries with Pontypridd finisher Dale Stuckey, just one behind.

Newport midfielder Matt O’Brien (6) is close behind while Black & Ambers teammate Luke Crane and Ryan Wilkins are in the frame with five tries apiece.

There’s been plenty of attacking intent on display this season and it seems Aberavon have two dangermen in their ranks with Andrew Waite and Chay Smith. The duo have both made eight line-breaks apiece to sit in front of O’Brien, and Wizards teammate Lloyd Evans and Cardiff duo Ioan Evans and Harri Millard who have made six line-breaks.

No-one has made more tackles than Cardiff’s Alex Everett. With 104 next to his name, he is the only player to have reached triple figures this season but Aberavon’s Ashton Evans (94) is closing in on the milestone while RGC’s Daniel Owen (89), Pontypridd’s Kristian Parker (87) and Ebbw Vale’s Alexander Grey (84) are copping down plenty of ball carriers.
