Classic ‘East v West’ clash in Schools & Colleges League

Luca de la Rua in action for Wales U18

Euros Evans knows exactly what it takes to win the WRU National Schools & Colleges League having guided Coleg Sir Gar to nine finals and four triumphs.

But his Llanelli-based side hasn’t won since 2017 and he is hoping the Class of ‘22 can recapture the former glory days this season. So far, so good with three successive bonus-point wins to kick-off the campaign, but the acid test comes in Round 5 at the home of the current champions.

It will be a classic East v West battle when Cardiff & Vale College welcome Sir Gar to their new 3G pitch at Canal Park, Dumballs Road. The last team to play there in the tournament left on the end of a 142-0, 22 try defeat!

“They are playing some really powerfully and attractive rugby this season and regardless off the strength of the opposition, it takes something special to score that many points and tries,” said Evans.

“At the moment you’d have to say the balance of power this season looks to be in the Welsh capital city given the strength of Martyn Fowler’s squad and the way in which Ysgol Glantaf have started their season.

“We’ve had a couple of difficult years in terms of the talent coming through our ranks. We had to battle against COVID and we’ve also seen a lot of players take up opportunities on the other side of the Severn Bridge.

“The signs are looking good for the next few years and when we field our best team now, we are a pretty decent outfit. Just how decent we’ll find out when we play the champions.”

With both teams having picked up the maximum 15 points from their three games to date it will be winner takes all in the battle for top spot. Coleg Y Cymoedd also have 15 points, but have played a game more, while Glantaf are unbeaten on 14 points with three wins.

Having run riot against Pembrokeshire College in Round 2, CAVC showed their true potential with a seven try, 47-29 triumph in a re-run of last season’s final at Llandovery College. Dylan Lewis ran in two of them and the others came from Ethan Rudjy, the outstanding Lucas de la Rua, Evan Saltmarsh, Elijah Evans and Flynn Baker, with Tom Hughes adding six conversions.

Llandovery, runners up last season and unbeaten going into the re-match, will be hoping to get back to winning ways at Church Bank, Llandovery when they meet Coleg Llandrillo. The Gogs beat Bridgend College 39-5 last weekend to make it three wins from four games.

They scored six tries, with Jac and Joe Roberts each scoring a brace. Sam Jones and Ethan Say got the others and Caio Parry converted three and kicked a penalty.

Gower College will be hoping to build on their 24-17 win over Coleg Gwent last week when they head to The Gnoll to face Neath Port Talbot College. NPTC were beaten 47-12 at Newport HS last week.

The Rob Sidoli coached Newport HS side ran in seven tries and head to Whitchurch HS for another exciting clash in Round 5. Whitchurch were beaten 27-0 by former champions Coleg Y Cymoedd in last week’s televised match.
