“We only had one player from the Scarlets drop down to play for us. He played incredibly well and I remember saying after the game that we wouldn’t see him again because he’s a bit too good,” recalled Evans.
That player was none other than Tadgh Beirne, who went on to star for the Scarlets in their PRO12 Final win and then return to his native Ireland to play with such distinction for Munster, Ireland and the British & Irish Lions.
“We won 28-26 that day and we always enjoy going to Cardiff to play. We always play well on artificial surfaces and their pitch certainly suits our style,” added Evans.
“Playing against Cardiff at the Arms Park is always the ultimate test and even through they won’t have many players playing down for them, they have a very solid side. Dan Fish is playing at No 10 for them and he is going to look to control things with his boot.
“Our target is a top four finish to ensure we make the play-offs and we’ve been happy with our start. Now we’re going to find out just how good we are, or how much more work we need to do.”
Both teams currently trial league leaders Aberavon by eight points, but have a game in hand. The Wizards have won all six games to date with a try bonus-point and are in action on Sunday at Newport in a game against the side that is surprisingly propping up the table.
“This will be our biggest game of the season so far against a Llandovery side that works hard without the ball. We have had a great working week ahead of the game and we know this will be a huge challenge,” admitted Cardiff head coach Steve Law.
“We’ve made several changes with international and senior side call ups plus several injuries across Cardiff Rugby, but we still have a very talented group of players taking to the field.
“Those coming in have an opportunity to show what they can bring to the side, and we will have to apply ourselves on Saturday. If we can bring a performance, then it will be a fantastic game to watch between two quality sides.”
Ebbw Vale host Swansea and Pontypridd entertain Llanelli in the other two games that kick-off at 2.30pm. Then RGC host Bridgend at Parc Eirias at 5.30pm.
