It was a great boost ahead of crunch game against last season’s winners, Bargoed, at Pontypool Park on 12 November. That game will be a key indicator in who might end up with the title this season.
“It’s a massive honour to reach 50 games given all the greats that have come before from this club. Any club that prides itself on the values that Pontypool does, it’s an honour to achieve it with them,” said Lewis.
“After last week there were a lot of questions asked of us on Tuesday and Thursday, but we’ve definitely answered them today. It was great to put the wrongs right from last Saturday against Ystrad Rhondda.
“I’m always happy to get on the scoreboard but the result and performance are the main things, my try is just a little bonus.”
Pontypool opened the scoring after a period of pressure, lock Ashley Sweet proving too powerful as he shrugged several challenges off to get over for the first try.
Huw Anderson was next to get on the scoresheet following a delightful pass from Matthew Jervis. And Pontypool backed it up with a dominant try off their maul, as Luke Flemming Jones claimed the try.
Tries from Lewis and Dan Babos saw Pooler lead 35-0 at half time. A Deon Smith interception helped Sweet bag his second try of the afternoon, before Flemming-Jones also scored his second try of the game, from an ingenious lineout move.
Glamorgan Wanderers headed into the game, with a long list of injuries. But Pontypool were ruthless, as they saw out a 54-0 victory.
Neath continued to cling to the lead, at the top of the table, after beating Tata Steel 69-8. Neath claimed the bonus point just before half time, despite having to break down a resilient Tata side.
It was a gritty first half and Neath’s forwards were made to work hard. However, following the break the Welsh All blacks were to run in eight further tries, as they put Tata to the sword, as their fitness levels dropped.
Joshua Clark had a fantastic game at hooker, having scored in the tight, he made a break in the middle of the field and found Jon Bayliss who finished nicely under the posts.
Owain Morgan was next to go over, following some excellent play from Neath’s forwards. Second half tries from Lewis Evans, Morgan Kneath and Two tries from Steff Williams, sealed a dominant win for Neath.
Bargoed secured an impressive win over Cross Keys. Steff Jones opened the scoring with a penalty. Wade Langley scored an impressive try, following some patient work from the Bulls, before Tom Rice added another.
Cross Keys were struggling to deal with Bargoed’s accuracy. The home side continued to dominate into the second half and Lewis Lydiate added another try.
Walker Price scored out wide for Cross Keys, and although Adam Tetley added the conversion, Bargoed hit straight back, all but sealing the win, with tries from James Leadbeater and Lydiate completed a 37-7 victory.
Bedwas clinched a comfortable 34-3 win against Ystalyfera. There were five tries for the ‘Was, with Dan Hill, Jacob Wright, Aaron Billingham, Lewis Bowden and Iwan Burgwin all crossing.
Ystrad Rhondda got back to winning ways, with a dominant 43-13 victory over Trebanos. Jarrad Llewellyn helped himself to a hat-trick of tries for Ystrad and there were two tries for Cole Morgan and one each for Kurtis Williams and Liam Wiggins. Rhys Trulove added four conversions.
Cardiff Met won a thriller against Beddau, who really showed a good account of themselves. Two tries from Alex Terry, and a try apiece for Sam Trodd and Cai Davies was enough to sink Beddau, 37-29.
It was defeat this time out for Maesteg Quins, who lost 31-3 against Narberth. Owen Howe scored the Quins only points of the afternoon.
Narberth added five tries through Ilan Phillips, Lewys Gibby, George McDonald and a penalty try. Ianto Griffiths added two conversions, to seal a convincing win for the Otters.
