‘Frustrated’ Strange still happy to take five points

Carrick McDonough

Carrick McDonough was once again among the tries for Ebbw Vale

Ebbw Vale head coach Jason Strange was a very frustrated man despite seeing his Ebbw Vale side pick up a 22-9, bonus-point win over Swansea in a feisty Indigo Premiership affair.

Former Wales U20 speedster Carrick McDonough helped himself to two tries as the Steelmen secured the full five points.

“If I had to use one word to sum up that game, it would be ‘frustrating’. The game lacked flow and we were our own worst enemy at times with the amount of errors we made,” admitted Strange.

“Even though we took the five points, we were way too inconsistent to be happy with that performance. There were too many errors.

“The bonus point was a consolation, so ultimately that’s what the game will be remembered for. But we want to judge ourselves on our own standards and today I thought we took a step back from the way we have been playing this year.

“We were good in patches but way too inconsistent to be challenging against the top three teams. We have a very tough match coming up next against Aberavon

“I think we are capable of playing at that level, but we need to do that for more than 30 or 40 minutes.”

The visitors got off to the perfect start and were ahead inside the opening five minutes thanks to a Cai Evans penalty. The Ospreys full back then doubled his side’s lead soon after.

The Steelmen’s opening try came in style when Lewis Young powered through the Swansea defence before sending a looping pass out wide for Rhys Francis. He raced down the wing before throwing a clever inside pass to McDonough, who sped over to score.

Evans was then taken out in the air as he went to catch a high ball and made the home side pay by kicking the resulting penalty from inside his own half.

The Steelmen’s second try came when Evan Lloyd chipped to the corner from a penalty and Rhys Francis peeled off an unstoppable maul to score in the corner.

Then a huge 50-22 kick by Lloyd gave the home side an attacking lineout and a couple of phases later Chad Thomas crashed over for another try.

And with the last play of the game the home side grabbed a well-earned bonus point when a superb turn of pace by substitute Ethan Phillips sent McDonough racing in for his second try.

Scorers: Ebbw Vale: Tries: C McDonough 2, R Francis, C Thomas; Con: E Lloyd. Swansea: Pens: C Evans 3
