Wing Elis Lewis and full back Ryan Williams were the toast of Ammanford after they steered their side to an epic WRU Division 1 Cup win over Brecon.

Lewis’ two first half tries laid the groundwork and then Williams’ ever-reliable boot landed the matchwinning penalty after the visitors had fought they way into the lead.

It was two tries apiece and 12-12 at the break in one of the matches of the season at The Rec. Williams kicked a penalty before Brecon hit back with a third try, this time converted, to make it 19-15.

As the nerves started to strain, Harrison Griffiths went over for a try that Williams improved to make it 22-19 to the home side. A fourth change of lead arrived when Brecon went over for their fourth try, 24-22, before Williams won the day with a wide-angled penalty to make it 25-24.

That sets up Ammanford for a home quarter-final against St Joseph’s. There were also wins in the re-scheduled matches for Bonymaen, who triumphed 25-19 at home to Birchgrove, and Llangennech, who triumphed 23-14 at Mountain Ash.

Bonymaen will have home advantage over the unbeaten leaders of Division 1 North, Nant Conwy, who extended their lead at the top of the table to 10 points with a 10th straight victory over defending champions Llandudno with a 23-22 win.

Llangennech will head to St Peter’s who are currently eight points clear at the top of Division 1 East Central after their 39-21 home win over Porth Quins.

As well as Nant Conwy, Newbridge remain unbeaten in league and cup and reached the half-way mark in the Division 1 East table with an 11th straight bonus-point win as they thumped Pontypool United 71-7.
