WSC Rugby: Bragging rights up for grabs between Glantaf and Whitchurch

Action from the CAVC v Llandrillo game in Round 1

It’s not so long ago that Teddy Williams and Christ Tshiunza were battling it out in the line-out when Ysgol Glantaf played Whitchurch HS in the Welsh Schools & Colleges League.

Williams won his first cap this summer and is now a firm fixture in the Cardiff Rugby squad, while Tshiunza has made two appearances already at the Rugby World Cup in France.

The top two rugby playing schools in the Welsh capital will clash at Glantaf in Round 3 of the WSC Rugby Conference A (Wednesday, 11 October – 2.30pm kick-off) in a local derby that is set to live up to its billing.

Glantaf may have had the upper hand in recent seasons, but Whitchurch will arrive from their one mile journey feeling ready to cause an upset after beating former champions Coleg Y Cymoedd 24-8. It was the first time they had beaten Cymoedd in the competition.

Tries from wing Rhys Thomas, No 8 Mitchell Shields and skipper and centre Iestyn Hutchings did the trick for the home side, who also had three conversions and a penalty from outside half Fraser Britton. Cymoedd countered with a try from Dylan Scott and a penalty from Sam Talnot to briefly edge ahead 8-7.

It was the second defeat in a row for Cymoedd, who went down to a heavy 37-16 home loss to Llandovery College in the opening round. Llandovery are now two points clear at the top of the table after their 23-21 win over Glantaf last week.

Finalists two years ago, they head to Coleg Gwent for Round 3, where they will be hoping to keep ahead of last season’s finalists, Cardiff & Vale College and Coleg Sir Gar. They played out a 27-27 draw in Cardiff Bay, with the home side recovering from being 17 points adrift to take a share of the spoils.

Sir Gar tight head prop Jac Pritchard was the star of the game as he bagged two tries from five metre tap penalties and made a third from another close-range effort. It took a try and conversion from Tom Hughes to haul the champions back into the contest and a 66th minute penalty off the 10 metre line secured two priceless points.

CAVC head to Cymoedd for a Cardiff Rugby regional clash, while Sir Gar host Coleg Llandrillo, who enjoyed a 50-12 home win over Coleg Gwent in Round 2. That was a big improvement on their 28-5 defeat to CAVC on the opening round.

Gower College are top of the table in Conference B and will be looking to make it a hat-trick of wins when they host new boys Ysgol Dyffryn Aman. The Aman recovered from a 48-26 defeat at Newport HS in their first game in the tournament to beat Neath Port Talbot College 19-10 last week.

Another of the three new schools now playing in the A License league, Ysgol Ystalyfera, are unbeaten in their two opening games and will be looking to pick up a third win when they head to The Gnoll for face NPTC.
