Tom Howe has been sidelined through injury

Ysgol Glantaf, last season’s runners-up in Conference A of WSC U18 Rugby, are hoping Wales U18 hooker Tom Howe shakes off an ankle injury that forced him to limp out of their 36-20 win over Coleg y Cymoedd at the Arms Park in Round 1.

The Cardiff Rugby junior academy starlet left the five try win on the hour mark, by which time the damage had been done. Speedy wing Joseff Jones stole the headlines with a thrilling hat-trick of tries, while Lloyd Lucas helped himself to 16 points with a try, four conversions and a penalty.

Glantaf now face another local derby in Round 2 when they host Dai Young’s Cardiff & Vale College. The other Cardiff side, Whitchurch HS, will be hoping to hold on to top spot when they head to newly promoted Gower College.

Whitchurch kicked-off with a comprehensive 45-10 home win over Coleg Llandrillo which featured two tries apiece for scrum half Rhys Ruttley and wing Salem Kiambi among their half-dozen. Outside half Fraser Britton converted them all and added a penalty for a match haul of 15 points.

Wales U18 lock Sonny McCabe was another try scorer for the home team, while Llandrillo had tries from Ben Senior and Brychan Gwilym. Llandrillo head to mid Wales in Round 2 to tackle reigning chanpions Llandovery College.

Llandovery had to dig deep to get past CAVC in Round 1, eventually winning 32-19. Wing Tom Williams scored twice for the cup holders, with centre Gryff Watkins and hooker Owen Griffiths getting the others and Wales U18 outside half Carwyn Leggatt-Jones kicked 12 points.

There will be a battle between the old giants of the competition when Coleg y Cymoedd host Coleg Sir Gar in Round 2. Sir Gar got off to a winning start with their 40-21 win over Gower College. Full back Sion Jones ran in two of their six tries in a great all-round performance
