FORMER WALES CAP PASSES

Geoffrey Thomas Beckingham hooked for Cardiff and made appearances for Wales against England and Scotland in 1953 and France in 1958. He was a quiet, unobtrusive player, he starred in Cardiff’s 8-3 victory over the 1953 All Blacks, helping save the game in the final moments as he stole the heel against the head on three occasions for fly half Cliff Morgan to kick to safety.
 
‘Becky’ was born in Barry on July 29, 1924, where he worked as a gardener for the local council, before becoming a playing fields supervisor for the Ogwr Borough Council. He had attended Romilly School in Barry and played a few games for Dinas Powys, before playing over 300 times for Cardiff.
 
He hardly ever wore a tie and at a function after Cardiff had defeated the Romanian national side, he slipped outside to give his opposite number advice on how to hook. After retiring from the top-class scene, he coached for a short while at Penarth and then with Barry Plastics RFC.
