Cardiac Awareness
Defibrillators
The Welsh Rugby Union has teamed up with the Calon Hearts charity to ensure life-saving defibrillators have been offered to every club in Wales, free of charge.
With more than 300 clubs throughout the country hosting rugby from senior men and women at clubs and hubs to a wide range of junior teams every weekend, the offer will be of benefit to thousands.
Calon Hearts offer a wide range of support to clubs which includes being trained on how to use a defibrillator, and guidance to effectively maintain your club defibrillator.
There is currently an opportunity to access free heart screening, with more information below.
Why do we need an AED?
- Thousands of people unexpectedly suffer from a cardiac arrest each year.
- Often the first symptom is sudden collapse where the patient is not breathing
and has no heartbeat. - Prompt cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and early defibrillation is the only
effective treatment for this event. - AEDs work by looking for and treating the electrical disturbances that can occur during a cardiac arrest. The provision of AEDs in sporting venues across Wales is now widespread and a majority of clubs have access to at least one AED on site.
