The first Disability Six Nations in the Ospreys region took place last week with more than 250 children from SEN schools and units in Swansea, Bridgend and Neath Port Talbot taking part in a range of fun and engaging activities.
Part of the day saw 10 made-to-measure rugby wheelchairs in use for the first time.
The wheelchairs were commissioned by Prince’s Gate Trust (renamed Dare to Dream Trust) and donated to Disability Sport Wales who handed them over to the Welsh Rugby Union at Friday’s event. They will be used at events all over Wales to introduce new players of all ages to wheelchair rugby, adding another element to the opportunities now in place for disability and mixed ability rugby across Wales.
Along with wheelchair rugby, there has been a significant increase in every aspect of the Disability Rugby strategy since it was launched a year ago. There are now Inclusive Community Clubs for 6 to 16 year olds in every region; there are six adult mixed ability teams around Wales and there is a more inclusive approach to delivering rugby throughout the game with hub officers and WRU staff completing inclusion training and offering playing opportunities to all pupils at their schools and colleges.
