Chwarae Teg: An Inspiration

Despite an overwhelming response for the Zurich Junior Chwarae Teg Award, the December winner is Shaun Donovan from Dunvant RFC.

During a match in December 1999, Shaun suffered a high tackle against Wanarlwydd that ignited a drastic change in his life! Shaun was rushed to casualty after suffering from blurred vision and he was diagnosed with a rare brain tumour. He was immediately transferred to London and after 6 hours of brain surgery, Shaun spent his Christmas in intensive care. He endured radio therapy and extensive treatment yet he was still eager to return to his club.

Shaun received the greatest blow of his rugby career as the medical team advised him that would not be able to continue. Despite the major set back, Shaun was determined to pick up the oval ball again. With the help of Dunvant team manager Selwyn Davies, coaches Martin Newbury, Shaun began his rugby comeback.

Coincidentally, Shaun’s return was against Waunarlwydd in September 2000. As an early Christmas present, Shaun scored his first try this season for Dunvant U11s. His determination and commitment has been an inspiration.

Sarah O’Rafferty, Sponsorship Manager at Zurich said: “Having been told that Shaun couldn’t play again, he defeated the odds with his determination and courage and is now back playing rugby after going through so much at a young age.”

Nominations for the January award should be sent to Dragons Rugby Trust, Custom House, Custom House Street, Cardiff, CF10 1RF or chwaraeteg@wru.co.uk
