The first international meeting between Ireland and Wales was January 28th 1882. Wales won ‘by two goals, and two tries to nil,’ which in today’s language means 4 tries, with two conversions.
The first fixture between the two nations immediately sparked controversy, with two Irish players walking off apparently ‘with disgust’.- reports of the match said there were ‘sundry’ disputes’ between the Irish team and the Welsh umpire, Mr Richard Mulloch.
Since that day Ireland and Wales have squared up over 100 times, 105 to be exact. Wales have won 60 of these battles and lost 39. On six occasions the honours have been even.
Sunday’s venue, Lansdowne road, has hosted 52 of these match ups, Wales have a good record, winning 26 times, losing 22 times, with 4 draws.
Neil Jenkins has scored the most points against the Irish- three tries, nine conversions, 26 penalties and a drop goal make up the grand total of 113.
Powerhouse Scott Quinnell has scored more tries than any other Welsh forward, nine in total, but interestingly, not one against the Irish…will this weekend see him break that hoodoo?
