Ojomoh Beefs Up Newport Back Row
Former Bath, Gloucester and England back rower Steve Ojomoh has signed a one year contract to join the Welsh Premiership side Newport.
The 6ft 3” 17 stone powerful flanker is renowned for his big hits, ball carrying skills and his tremendous work rate around the field.
With 12 England caps to his name, Ojomoh is a lucrative signing for Newport and will bring a wealth of experience to the black and amber’s cause as they go for glory in Europe this season.
Ojomoh has joined from top Italian side Parma and is looking forward immensely to the challenge that lies ahead.
“For whatever reason, Wales’ international performances do not reflect the strength of their club rugby,” he said.
“I have always had huge respect for the Welsh club scene and Newport, more than most, have made unbelievable progress this last three seasons.
“On the field they are right up there with the very best sides in Europe whilst off-the-field, their marketing and community work is setting the standard for others to follow.
“It’s very obvious that I’m joining a really big club that has great ambition. I can’t wait to get started!”
Primarily a blindside flanker,Ojomoh has played a lot of his rugby at No.8 While he will be contesting the 6 and jerseys with young guns Andy Powell and Alix Popham, his experience is sure to be of immeasurable benefit to both young men.
Commenting on the signing, Newport’s Director of Rugby Darryl Jones said: “As an outstanding player with an impeccable track record, we are delighted to have signed Steve. He fills and even exceeds all the requirements of a back row player in the modern game; he is abrasive, a heavy tackler, a tremendous ball carrier and a man that can always be relied upon to make the hard yards and to get his team over the gain line”.
