Caerphilly Pick Up Bonus Point In 14 Try Epic

CAERPHILLY 32 EDINBURGH 66
Caerphilly have broken an unenviable Celtic League record. The Virginia Park team held the tournament record for most points conceded when Connacht beat them 62-0 last season.

They went one better on Saturday, allowing Edinburgh to waltz in for 66 points, scoring 32 in reply.

Mercurial New Zealand fullback Brendan Laney supplied 31 points, including two tries, and things would have been much worse for Caerphilly if visiting coach Frank Hadden hadn’t thrown his reserves on at halftime when leading 52-13.

Caerphilly actually won the second half 19-14, and their five tries gave Mark Ring’s side a bonus point.
The former Wales star has brought an attractive running game to Virginia Park, but he’ll have to get the tackle bags out at training if Caerphilly are going to win anything this season.

They’ve lost all four Celtic League matches this season, to remain winless in the tournament’s history, and have conceded 154 points in the past three weekends.

Ring was proud of his side’s effort in the second half against “the best team we have played this season.”

“All the players are looking forward to facing Swansea next week after their second half display,” Ring said.

“Edinburgh were by far the best side we’ve played this season – much better than Llanelli. The problem was we hung off them and gave them too much respect in the first half.”
