Davey Pleased With Performance

Wales under-21 coach Chris Davey and his assistant Kevin Hopkins were well pleased with Tuesday night’s two under-21 trials played at Waterton Cross, the South Wales Police ground.

“It was a good standard and most pleasing,” said Davey. “And surprising to see one player run in for six tries in one of the matches.”

That was Bridgend wing Matthew Owen, who scored his 30 points in the second trial game and will be pushing strongly for a place in the final trial at the same venue on Sunday (2.00 pm).

“We held back several boys who played last season and who we know well. I told all the players that there were others who will come into contention. We play New Zealand on Friday, November 29 at the Cardiff club ground.

“We will then play an A international in England on December 18, though the venue for that match is not yet decided. However, we have 12 players who went to South Africa last summer available for selection.”
