UWIC Women went 3-0 down to an early penalty from England ‘A’ fly half Vicky McCormack. They then had what was to be the first of several strokes of luck when Kerry Jenkins hit the post with her penalty attempt only for the Loughborough winger to then knock the ball on. This led to a UWIC scrum and Hayley Baxter scoring the first of her two tries out wide.

Baxter’s second was a 60m sprint down the right touchline as Loughborough struggled to cope with her pace to put the Welsh side 12-3 ahead.

UWIC, well led by centre Jilly Holroyd, were in a position to turn the screw on their opponents but the midlanders, superbly marsalled by fly half McCormack and full back Charlotte Barras, scored two second half tries to lead 13-12.

With time running out, Welsh fly half Naomi Thomas put width on the ball to try and creat space for UWIC’s speed advantage out wide and this paid off when Wales U19 full back Sara Weldon crossed in the corner in the 81st minute.

Scrum half Kerry Jenkins nipped over for a further injury time effort as UWIC won 22-13.
