London Irish have blasted rumours that they have approached Colin Charvis as ‘nonsense’ and ruled out any move for the former Wales skipper.

Charvis is on the market for a new club after on-going negotiations with the Neath-Swansea Ospreys finally broke down earlier this week.

It is almost certain that he will have to look outside of Wales given the lack of money and vacancies at any of the other four regions.

But London Irish director of rugby Conor O’Shea insisted the exiles had not stepped in for the 57-times capped British Lion back-rower and are not interested in splashing out on another player.

‘Colin Charvis is undoubtedly a quality player but there is no way we are looking at bringing in another back-row player given the strength in depth we have in that area,’ said O’Shea.

‘We have just signed Canadian international Phil Murphy from Perpignan and have Chris Sheasby to cover the number eight position.

‘We also have Paul Gustard, England Under-21 Mike Haslef, England A Declan Danaher and Irish international Kieron Dawson all here so there is no room for anyone else.’
