The six tries scored by Newport leaves them 11 in front of Neath by 81-70, while Llanelli remain in the penultimate spot with just Ebbw Vale beneath them.

A perfect pitch, despite earlier heavy rain, and a fine and vociferous crowd gave Newport the base on which skipper Gareth Gravell and his team revelled and it he and scrum Llyr Lane, both former Llanelli clubmen, who were outstanding.

Tries for Newport came from Gravell, Rhys Jones, Owen Jones, Craig Richards, Sam Waldron and a penalty try, while fly half Dan Griffiths, another player who has previously appeared in Scarlet colours, kicked four conversions and two penalty goals.

Centre Ceiron Thomas kicked a penalty hat-trick for Llanelli, who included internationals Mark Jones, Leigh Davies, David Hodges, John Thiel and Emyr Lewis.
