‘Gareth is the longest serving rugby international in the world game having first played for Wales first 1989. To have played Test rugby in three different decades is a remarkable achievement and one which will take some beating in the modern game,’ said Mr Moffett.

‘His commitment to his country, and his dedication to training, are shining examples for everyone else in the game to follow and it will be a special moment for Gareth and his family when he overtakes Neil Jenkins to become Welsh rugby’s most capped player this weekend. It is a landmark that great players like Neil (87), Ieuan Evans (72), JPR Williams (55), Gareth Edwards (53), Ken Jones (44), Dickie Owen (35), Billy Bancroft (33) and Arthur Gould (27) have all reached in the past.

‘Gareth’s line-out expertise is world renowned, but his fitness level is also legendary among the Welsh squad. More than anything else, personal pride in his performance on both the training field and in the Test arena have carried him to the pinnacle of the Welsh game.

‘He has captained his country, led the Welsh pack and developed into the senior professional in the Welsh squad. He will once again be a key player in the Welsh side against the Pumas – the first competitive match for his eighth Welsh coach, Mike Ruddock.’
