Dragons Overcome Edinburgh

Newport Gwent Dragons ended Wales’ wait for victory in the Heineken Cup with a nail-biting victory over Edinburgh at Murrayfield.

After six straight defeats for Welsh regions in Europe this season, the Dragons were in seventh heaven as they got their Heineken Cup campaign back on track through tries from Gareth Wyatt and Hal Luscombe.

But for Edinburgh, they are now facing a task the size of Ben Nevis to equal last season’s achievement of making the quarter-finals.

The Dragons showed just one new face to the team that lost to Newcastle on the opening weekend with Gareth Baber replacing injuring scrum-half Gareth Cooper.

And it was only 16 minutes before Baber made his arrival count as he broke through a static Edinburgh defence before his chip ahead landed in the hands of the on-rushing Wyatt who beat Simon Webster for the line.

Edinburgh hit back to level the scores before half-time through hooker Dougie Hall who was at the front of a rampant lineout drive but they could not find the finishing touch after Luscombe had gone over for the Dragons on 54 minutes.

Edinburgh threw everything at the Dragons in the closing stages after Chris Paterson’s second penalty had brought them to within touching distance but Sione Tuipulotu’s last gasp tackle on back-row David Callum saved the win for the visitors.
